I talked to DH last night and asked if we could plan on staying home together for Thanksgiving with the only exception being my brother and SIL inviting us. (It's their first year in their new home and I think my SIL is a little overwhelmed inviting too many people so it might just be her family and I'm ok with that.) But we agreed if my family (yeah right) or his family (hello guilt trip...) call, our plan is to stay home alone with puggles (who also happens to be a turkey fan!).
So...assuming we are staying home...I plan on using our fancy china in the dining room with dinner for 2. Our dining room is usually the cleanest, neatest room in the whole house as it never gets used. I also never use my china when we have company as it makes me whacko for my china cabinet to look bare if I take the perfectly arranged place settings out to actually eat on. Seriously, I do have issues.
Anywho! What are your favorite out of the ordinary dishes for Thanksgiving (or any holiday really)? I complained yesterday that dinner at my in-laws is so boring with the same dishes every single year, no flavor experimenting or swapping out sides, no appetizers, nothing but pumpkin or squash pie (both yuck) and never rolls or biscuits, always Italian bread. It's good enough for dinner but doesn't excite me in the least. Or maybe it's the company...IDK.
We will probably just do a boneless turkey breast as I don't want leftovers for days and days. 2 people can only eat so much turkey!
I saw a recipe for Brussels sprouts with bacon and shallots so I added it to my list. www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/rachael-ray/brussels-sprouts-with-bacon-recipe/index.html
I also saw a recipe for a corn bread stuffing with sausage and apples but I'm going to have to convince my DH to go for it. He's not really a fruity kind of guy! www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/neelys/cornbread-stuffing-with-apples-and-sausage-recipe/index.html
Not sure what I will do for rolls yet. Even the cheapo roll of biscuits in the dairy department are more exciting to me than past years.
I just have to make sure I don't have a 5,000 calorie day. Not gaining weight this Thanksgiving as I was perfect on plan last year and know I can do it.
What can you all share?? No recipes are required, I'm a Google queen with any ideas you have!
